- Elements of Film Structure Part III
- We discussed the persistence of vision and how audiences are able to see and understand movement when viewing a film. I demonstrated this idea by taping a note card with an image of a man on one side and a jail on the opposite side to a pencil. I then spun the pencil between my hands creating an illusion of a man in jail. The image of the man and the jail are both present in the retinas for a brief period of time which allows the viewer to see both at once. This YouTube video does a good job of explaining the concept.
